Gunmen have abducted four candidates sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, alongside a school principal and a NECO ad hoc official in Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, located in Dekina Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, the attackers invaded the school premises while the examination was still in progress and whisked away the victims to an unknown destination.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Command said the abducted persons include four students, the school principal, and one NECO ad hoc staff member attached to the examination centre.
Police spokesperson, ASP Salisu Oyiza, disclosed that security agencies immediately launched a rescue operation following the attack.
She revealed that one of the abducted students has already been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The police also stated that the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, alongside other top security officials, visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students and examination officials during public examinations in parts of the country affected by insecurity.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies say operations are still ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and restore calm to the community.
