The National Examinations Council has revealed that it now conducts examinations in eight countries, marking a major expansion of its operations beyond Nigeria.
NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed this during the council’s 25th anniversary celebration held in Abuja.
According to him, the expansion reflects growing international recognition and acceptance of NECO certificates among foreign institutions and education stakeholders.
Wushishi said the examination body has transformed significantly since its establishment, overcoming early challenges linked to infrastructure, credibility concerns, and operational difficulties.
He stated that NECO has continued to strengthen its examination processes through digital reforms, improved security systems, and technology-driven services.
The registrar also noted that the council has introduced innovations such as electronic certificate verification, e-certificates, e-library services, and data analytics platforms aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in examination administration.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa announced that NECO would commence computer-based examinations as part of broader reforms designed to modernise Nigeria’s assessment system and reduce examination malpractice.
He explained that the transition to computer-based testing would strengthen examination credibility, improve monitoring of candidates, and align Nigeria’s education system with global best practices.
The minister also praised NECO for its growth over the past 25 years, describing the council as one of the key institutions safeguarding fairness and integrity in public examinations nationwide.
